Do you have a home inventory? Having a detailed record of your most valuable possessions can protect you in the event of a fire, burglary or natural disaster. When you have to make a home insurance claim, having a detailed inventory list helps you to prove your losses and get paid from your insurance company faster. When you have a major claim, it can be hard to remember all of your possessions. Having a list ready gives you one less thing to think about when going through a stressful situation.
What is a Home Inventory?
A home inventory is basically detailed documentation of each item in your home. It is important to have an itemized list with as many details as possible for your most valuable items (serial numbers, model numbers, cost, etc.). It can be a tedious process but will be much easier to do now, rather than after disaster strikes and you are trying to remember each item and gather all the data.
One of the easiest ways to do an inventory is to capture video. Take a video of each room in your home, one by one. Don’t forget to open drawers, closets, and cupboards (including wine cellars, jewelry boxes, and collections). Creating smaller videos of each room may be better than taking one large video of your whole home. You can combine the video with a spreadsheet or list.
If you don’t want to do the video route, there are many great home inventory apps including Home Contents, MyStuff 2 Pro, Nest Egg- Inventory, and other home inventory apps. Many of these integrate digital media like photos, scanning barcodes, and more.
List or Spreadsheet
Another way to do an inventory of your posessions is to simply start a spreadsheet or list of each room in your home, the items in it, and their value. There are many free home inventory templates to help you get started.
When you are done creating your home inventory, save it (along with any receipts or appraisals) in a safe place. This could be in a fireproof safe, in a secure cloud storage application such as Dropbox or iCloud, or offsite with a trusted friend or family member. Make multiple copies of the important documents in case the hardcopy gets destroyed.
